This is a part 1 of my Greece highlights series, where I discuss Athens. If you want to hear about Crete first click here!
Athens is the capital of Greece, therefore, it has a lot of history. A fun fact we learned on our trip is that Athens is Europe’s oldest capital city!
So, lets dive in to the details!
Where we stayed:
Athina, Greece: Here is the link to our airbnb. Getting to the airbnb requires a metra ride that takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The airbnb is located about 1 km from the city center of Athens, and 4 km from Acropolis.
Our main mode of transportation around Athens was either by foot or by uber.
Food:
The best meal I had was of course the chicken souvlaki that came with a side of rice and tzatziki. The portions are HUGE. Upon finishing dinner, you are given a complimentary dessert and shot. I thought this was because we had just arrived, and the restaurant staff wanted to be hospitable. Little did I know, we were given a complimentary dessert and shot at EVERY restaurant we went to. I found out the reason Greeks do this is because they want to ensure that you enjoy your dining experience from start to finish.
I am addicted to tzatziki, and the tzatziki in Greece was *chefs kiss* as one would expect.
If you’re a coffee addict like me, you’re probably wondering what kind of coffee they have in Greece. Well, you’re in luck because their freddo espresso is a classic. It is super foamy and delicious, and also photographic.
We did A LOT of eating in Greece. Greek food is one of my favorite cuisines, so we definitely indulged.
Acropolis
Our second day in Athens, we headed to Acropolis. This is a must-see when in Athens. It is incredible to experience such ancient architecture. You also get stunning views of the city from here. The ticket cost 10 Euros, as we visited during the off-season. Normally, you can expect to pay between 10-20 Euros, depending on when you visit.
Since it was the off-season, there really wasn’t much of a crowd. However, that is not the norm.
You can expect to spend up to 3 hours exploring Acropolis. Since it was a little windy on the day we went, we spent about 1.5 hours exploring.
After touring Acropolis, and getting in our many steps it was time for lunch. Like I said, food was the main attraction of our trip to Greece.
Nightlife:
We found a bar with the most incredible view of Acropolis. It was called MS Roof Garden. I mean the views are just unreal. We loved this place so much we ended up staying until dark.
We also checked out another bar called Noel. It has a very unique atmosphere and gives off royal/decadent vibes. I would highly recommend both of these spots when visiting Athens.
Quick Tips
You can hit all the hot spots of Athens in 2 days.
Athens is an incredibly safe city in my opinion. Just be aware of your surroundings like you would anywhere else.
Most people are very friendly! Although, you may encounter some aggressive salesmen in the tourist areas.
I recommend using either Waze or Google maps for all navigation.
